The Friends of The Wettern Tree Garden (“the Friends”) have worked in liaison with Croydon Council to maintain the peaceful Wettern Tree Garden for the enjoyment of local residents since 2004.
However, when Croydon Council issued its first section 114 notice on 11 November 2020, in effect declaring itself bankrupt, Council maintenance of the garden was drastically cut. Council activities have been largely limited to some grass cutting and an annual cut of the hedges since 2020. The Council provides other maintenance such as emptying bins, clearing green waste and removing fallen branches. The Council, of course, remains responsible for the site, including, for example safety issues.
It was clear that The Friends needed to ramp up their efforts substantially, in cooperation with Croydon Council, if the garden was to be maintained in a condition for local residents to enjoy. The Friends have therefore attracted more members, increased working parties and formalised their structure with a constitution and elected committee. The funding for The Friends from Croydon Council ceased in 2021. In addition, the funding needs are greater in the current circumstances. Hence, we are very grateful for subscriptions and donations from our growing number of members and have also raised some funds from local businesses.
